Legal compliance in academic and educational practice in digital era: Exploring the legal framework for data protection and copyright laws

Legal compliance with the data protection and intellectual property laws is always a major concern for many people taking part in educational and academic activities. This workshop aims to present the overall legal framework with a particular focus on the matters which frequently give rise to questions and uncertainties. In order to overcome them, we will discuss, inter alia, key aspects of data protection law and how to ensure a high level compliance, the copyright related questions that should be considered while preparation of the class materials, and particularly relevant legal exemptions.

The workshop concentrates also the use of LLMs that have the potential to additionally complicate the legal protection regime to alert legal risks, and to promote more compliant methods to effectively benefite from new technologies. The workshop will last two hours and will be held in English, but questions & comments in French and German are more than welcomed.

This training course is part of the EduKIA program developed jointly by HES-SO and the University of Fribourg and offered as part of the “Open Education & Digital Competencies” project (PgB 2025-2028).

This training course does not count towards obtaining the Attestation didactique de la HES-SO.
