The aim of the HES⁠-⁠SO Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) is to train future engineers who are capable of taking responsibility for large-scale projects in technological and civil engineering fields.

Fees
For Swiss students (as defined by AHES, this refers to students of Swiss nationality or those fiscally domiciled in Switzerland), a semester costs CHF 950, which includes:
- CHF 700: tuition fee
- CHF 250: contribution to study costs for certain services
Application fee to be paid upon submission of the application: CHF 150

For foreign students (those considered foreign under the AHES agreement are individuals of foreign nationality who do not have their fiscal domicile in Switzerland at the time of enrollment), a semester costs CHF 1300, which includes:
- CHF 1050: tuition fee
- CHF 250: contribution to study costs for certain services
Application fee to be paid upon submission of the application: CHF 150

Course

The course consists of three parts, each worth 30 credits

Consolidation of theoretical knowledge
Development of occupational skills
Master’s thesis: Applied R&D project in conjunction with a business.

The emphasis is on the development of both personal, methodological and entrepreneurial competencies and technical skills, preparing graduates for roles as project managers in a business.

Aimed at the Bachelor’s students in the Engineering and Architecture area at UAS level or equivalent, the MSE draws on the best teaching staff from the Applied R&D laboratories in various HES-SO institutions, organised in research institutes. Each student has access to the institute infrastructure and equipment and, if necessary, to the facilities available in partner businesses. This guarantees optimal conditions for the development of high-level professional projects.

HES-SO’s course stands out from other Master’s programmes in Swiss and foreign universities, thanks to:

Its alignment with the needs of the job market, particularly at the level of small and medium-sized businesses
Its focus on professional practice
The high level of supervision offered to students
The opportunity for students to develop their own study agreement in conjunction with their adviser, i.e. creating an optimal pathway at each stage of the course to meet their training and skills development objectives.

Admission requirements

The MSE is aimed at the Bachelor’s students. Applicants are subject to an admissions procedure by portfolio subject to availability.

Admission applies to holders of a Bachelor’s degree or UAS diploma in a relevant subject.

The HES-SO Bachelor’s courses eligible for access to the MSE are as follows:

Persons who meet the following conditions are also eligible to submit an application:

Bachelor’s degree or UAS diploma in another field of engineering (ICT/InT) or construction (CEN), with one year’s full-time professional practice completed
Bachelor’s degree awarded by a university or Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in another field of engineering (ICT/InT) or construction (CEN), or an equivalent Swiss or foreign qualification with a minimum of one year’s full-time professional practice completed

Places are offered by the Admissions Committee, which assesses the quality of each application, based on the applicant’s academic background, professional experience and course.

Testimonials

Les cours les plus poussés techniquement dans la filière énergie électrique sont donnée à Berne en coopération avec les autres universités partenaire du MSE. L’anglais ajoute une dose de difficulté a priori mais une fois les termes techniques assimilés, le contenu du cours est accessible peu importe les origines des participants. Ces modules sont un bon complément pour apporter des connaissances techniques plus avancées sur de l’électronique de puissance, les systèmes électriques ou encore la conception haute tension.

J’ai eu la chance de réaliser ma thèse de Master à Hawaii, sur l’île de Big Island. Pour moi ça a été une occasion unique de travailler dans le domaine de l’observation astronomique, qui me passionne depuis des années. En plus du cadre idyllique qu’offre l’archipel, cette expérience à l’étranger m’as permis de me confronter à d’autres façon de travailler et de penser ainsi qu’améliorer mon anglais.
