Implementation assessment of the role of nurse practitioners in nursing homes in the canton of Vaud: a mixed-method study

In response to demographic ageing and the growing shortage of healthcare professionals in nursing homes (EMS), the Canton of Vaud has committed to supporting the implementation of the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) role in order to strengthen the quality and continuity of care for residents. Although this model is internationally recognized and well established, it remains underdeveloped in Switzerland.

In 2025, the first APNs took up their positions in two nursing homes in the Canton of Vaud, paving the way for a gradual transformation of the long-term care system.

The EVALIPS_VD project, supported by the HES-SO Health Domain, the Department of Health and Social Action of the Canton of Vaud, HévivA, and the Belle Saison and Pré Pariset Foundations, pursues two main objectives:

  1. To evaluate the implementation of APNs in nursing homes, as well as the effects of this new role on indicators related to residents, interprofessional teams, and the institution;
  2. To develop a best-practice toolkit based on the results obtained, in order to support the sustainable integration and scaling up of the APN role in long-term care.

Starting in September 2025 for a period of two years, EVALIPS_VD will actively contribute to the sustainable integration of this innovative role in the healthcare system at both cantonal and national levels.
