The Master of Arts in Music Performance prepares students for a career as a musical performer with a high level of artistic training, offering access to the employment market as an independent artist or within institutions such as orchestras or opera houses.

    Registration fee: CHF 150

    Tuition fees : from the autumn semester 2025, the fee will be CHF 700 per semester for Swiss students and CHF 1,050 for foreign students (according to the AHES definition, foreign students are students with no tax residence in Switzerland).

    A contribution to course fees may be charged. This varies depending on the school. Please enquire with the relevant admissions department.

Course

The considerable number of majors covers all the music performance professions within the wider field of music.

A significant part of the programme of study is dedicated to training in the main discipline (as instrumentalist, singer or conductor). Specific training enables students to gain in-depth experience of performance in different ensemble types, such as orchestras or chamber music ensembles. Finally, the programme of study includes a reflective analysis of the practical aspects (research in seminars).

The Orchestral major includes experience of playing with professional orchestras in Western Switzerland.

The two years of study lead to a Master's project designed around three axes: artistic production (recital), practical ensemble playing and reflective analysis.

Profiles

In addition to the classical music profile, available on all the campuses, there are also two specialist profiles:

  • Jazz and contemporary music, at the Haute Ecole de Musique de Lausanne
  • Ancient music, at the Haute école de musique de Genève.

Professional prospects

Chosen by the majority of instrumentalists and singers, the Concert major prepares students for a career as generalist musical performers. There are four options, within the fields of chamber music, contemporary music, compose-perform and, for singers, opera.

The Orchestral major prepares students for a career as an instrumentalist in an orchestra.

The Accompaniment major prepares students for a career as a piano accompanist, with production or educational institutions, while the Maestro al Cembalo is a continuo player as well as instrumental and/or vocal ensemble conductor within the field of historical music performance.

The Conducting majors prepare students for conducting ensembles at a non-professional level.
