Objectives

Developing a closed carbon cycle for mixed plastic waste, comprising the following steps:

  1. Introduce a waste treatment process tolerant to mixed (unselected) plastic waste.
  2. Reduce and eventually eliminate incineration of plastic waste and thus CO2 emissions.
  3. Reduce or even eliminate waste deposits, being a major issue in developing countries.
  4. Generate feed stock gas for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry.
  5. Replace and thus make obsolete the high temperature cracking process of crude oil in chemical industry, which is one of the major consumers of energy in the industrial sector in highly developed countries.
  6. Replace a major fraction of crude oil as feedstock for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry.
  7. Valorise the stoichiometrically emitted CO2 from plastic waste, e.g. by generating biodegradable plastics or via synthetic fuels (methane, methanol, etc.).
