AutoQuart

The objective of this project is to identify feasible strategies for demand-side management, possibly coupled to local storage solutions, allowing to optimize electric auto-consumption of local (e.g. photovoltaics) electricity production at the level of the distribution grid/the district.

The objective of this project is to identify feasible strategies for demand-side management, possibly coupled to local storage solutions, allowing to optimize electric auto-consumption of local (e.g. photovoltaics) electricity production at the level of the distribution grid/the district.

A variety of demand-side management schemes based have been proposed with different goals in mind such as minimizing electricity costs; providing active power reserves or ancillary services such as primary voltage control and primary frequency control. Here our goal is to maximize the aggregated auto-consumption of local (e.g. photovoltaics) electricity production at the district level.

Accordingly, our schemes for demand-side management try to control sizeable, yet flexible household loads such as washing machines and dryers, water boilers, electrical heating and heat pumps. While optimizing auto-consumption, we investigate in parallel the impact that this has on the distribution grid and the load fluctuations on the upper-level medium voltage grid. We have developed a numerical platform allowing to visualize these loads.
