This project aims to develop novel hydrogels for tissue engineering and biomedical applications. Hydrogels are cross-linked hydrophilic polymer networks with water as the dispersion media. They are based on biopolymers or on synthetic polymers and provide a (bio)mechanical scaffold for cells possessing special properties like biocompatibility and bioactivity.

Our approach is to develop intelligent hydrogel building blocks based on hyaluronic acid, gelatin or PEGs. Using this technique, task-specific modifiers can be simply integrated into this new smart hydrogels to modify the ionic and hydrophilic interactions, respectively biological environment to stimulate cell growth. These hydrogels find applications in 2D and 3D cell cultures as well as in drug delivery.
