Engineering & ArchitectureCentral modules

The Master of Science HES-SO in Life Sciences MSLS is offered in cooperation with three other Swiss Universities of Applied Sciences, namely: Berner Fachhochschule BFH, Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz FHNW, and Zürcher Fachhochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften ZHAW.

This cooperation MSLS offers two types of central modules (30 ECTS): the “Core Competence Modules” with business, entrepreneurship and data handling skills, which are relevant to all Master students, and the “Cluster-specific Modules” which are relevant to the specializations. The common central modules enable the students to exchange their professional experiences and expand their personal networks within the entire Life Science community.

Whereas the specialization modules (S-modules, 20 ECTS) and Master thesis modules (X-modules, 40 ECTS) are compulsory, there is more flexibility in choosing courses for the central modules. Out of seven “Core Competence” modules at least five have to be completed. For the “Cluster-Specsfic Modules” at least 3 have to be completed summing to a total of 30 ECTS:

Core Competence Modules encompass the most important competences for Life Science specialists in two fields, thus meeting the challenges originating from the job market (Big Data, Industry 4.0) and addressing the need to understand the concepts of entrepreneurship, innovation and business:

The Core Competence Modules take place on 3½ Fridays and are spread over half of the semester. These modules are taught partly in large groups (80-100 students), making up two-thirds of the contact lessons (central teaching, corresponding to 2 ECTS), and partially within local, small groups within the specializations (decentralized teaching, corresponding to 1 ECTS). For students from HES-SO the central teaching takes place in Fribourg. The decentralized teaching takes place intermittently during the week; for the detailed timetable see Schedule HES-SO MLS.
