Warning: This overview does not take into account specific and additional requirements such as aptitude tests or entrance exams. Only those provisions laid out in the relevant directives shall apply.

Regulation of student numbers

In consideration of the number of available training places, the HES-SO limits student numbers in certain programmes, as outlined in the directives; this applies to all applicants in the study streams concerned, irrespective of the route through which they apply to the programme.

Admission for holders of foreign degrees

For foreign degrees, the basic requirement for admission to Bachelor-level studies at a University of Applied Sciences (HES) is to hold a degree that is equivalent to a Swiss baccalaureate (maturité) as well as to demonstrate at least one year’s professional experience in a field relevant to the programme, or else to have successfully passed a preparatory year.
For general baccalaureate diplomas that are equivalent to a Swiss general baccalaureate (Maturité académique/gymnasiale), applicants can refer to this document. For students who have completed all or part of a cycle in a French university that is a signatory to the agreement, the rules of the Franco-Swiss Framework Agreement on the recognition of diplomas applies.

Recognition of education between Universities/Universities of Applied Sciences

In Western Switzerland, there is a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the mutual recognition of studies and degrees, and on the framework regulation concerning the transfer of students or graduates between universities. This MOU relates to all universities in Western Switzerland, namely the universities of Fribourg, Geneva, Lausanne, Neuchâtel, the EPFL, and the HES-SO.
