Inductive coupling RFID tags are widely used in a large variety of different application and it is definitely an established technology. The principle used for these tags can be applied adopting a capacitive coupling between the reader and the tag. The inductive approach has been widely preferred since it presents some advantages in terms of easiness of use, since it requires a loop antenna instead of a two plates (as for the capacitive approach) solving many problems in terms of alignment between the tag and the reader.

In this project, a novel investigation on this approach is proposed, claiming that because of poor scaling properties of magnetics, at micrometere-level, capacitive-coupling will result in a more efficient method for transferring power and data. Inspired by the concept of Smart Dust, developed in Berkeley (and also developed in the FP6 project e-Cubes), our aim is to build an RFID tag, capacitive-coupled, with a dimension in the order of a cubic centimetre.
