Master of Science HES-SO in Information Science

The HES-SO, more specifically the Haute école de gestion de Genève (HEG-GE), has decided to concentrate its Master's course in Information Studies on the field of strategic management and the organisation of important documentary structures in:

  • Large private and semi-private enterprises, multinationals
  • International organisations, NGOs
  • Large libraries, information centres in the civil service or equivalent bodies

Students wishing to acquire other skills are encouraged to follow a semester of studies abroad, in particular at the EBSI at the Université de Montréal, the preferred partner for the Information Studies course.

This master's course is aimed primarily at holders of a Bachelor's degree in Information Studies (or an equivalent qualification, such as a UAS diploma in Information Studies). Holders of a different degree from a Swiss university or college may be admitted, but will have to undertake a foundation course worth 60 ECTS.

Professional prospects

A varied range of studies have found a serious need for staff with information management and general management skills. This syllabus as defined undoubtedly responds to the need for managers educated to Master's level in professional environments in this field. At present, most managerial or highly specialised posts are occupied by:

  • persons who have no educational background in the field of information science;
  • Swiss employees who have followed a course abroad;
  • employees from abroad who have received higher education in information science.

The creation of this HES-SO Master's offers a long-awaited response to a difficult situation.

This Master's degree complements the Bachelor's degree in Information Science, placing the emphasis on the management of substantial departments, whether in large private or semi-private enterprises or NGOs, or with large libraries or the information centres of public administrations.
