| Principle
UAS teaching staff must hold a university-level diploma, have the benefit of several years' professional experience, prove their interest in research and provide evidence of teaching qualifications.
The following explains the latter point, i.e. the requirement for a teaching qualification imposed by the Swiss Federal law on UASs, and describes the means put in place by the HES-SO to comply with this requirement. |
|
| Who is affected by the requirement for a teaching qualification?
The teaching staff of the HES-SO, that is, as a general rule, those employed for at least 50% of standard working hours, including for activities in addition to teaching. |
|
| What is required of these members of teaching staff?
These members of staff must obtain the HES-SO teaching certificate, for which they must fulfil the following cumulative conditions:
- they must have taught for at least two years in a UAS;
- they must have undertaken fifteen days of basic teacher training, or obtained an equivalent qualification or recognition of learning outcomes;
- they must have received a recommendation from the principal of their college based in particular on the teaching evaluation process.
|
|
| Why these three conditions?
These conditions arise from the underlying teaching quality model, which bases the teaching qualification of teaching staff on the systematic coherence between three main pillars, i.e.:

-
A range of teaching and education training courses aimed at all members of teaching staff, offering basic teacher training for those starting their careers and specific subjects for those who are more experienced, to prepare them for their teaching activities. To this end, the HES-SO has established a teacher training department, which offers a regular schedule of basic and more advanced courses, accessible to all teachers.
-
An evaluation of the teaching given which also takes account of students' opinions. By this means, in addition to their own assessment, the members of teaching staff in question receive feedback on the progress of their teaching. To this end, each HES-SO college is obliged to implement a teaching evaluation system as part of its quality system.
-
A monitoring and personalised teaching support programme aimed at contributing to the development of teaching skills. This may be a matter of helping the member of teaching staff to get the maximum benefit from their teaching evaluation results, but also of providing educational support for teaching tasks, and advice on any problems that may arise. To this end, some HES-SO colleges have implemented a system for monitoring first-time teaching staff by allocating a mentor, or offer occasional support from more experienced colleagues. In addition, HES-SO offers all teaching staff and colleges a teaching advice service |
|
| Who takes care of all of this?
The "Educational and teacher training of teaching staff" response group ensures the appropriate coordination and coherence between the three pillars of the teaching qualification system, in collaboration with the group of contacts in the various colleges.
These two groups are presided over by the educational and teaching adviser of the HES-SO, who regularly takes part in leading teacher training days and is also available for advice on educational matters.
The teacher training days are led by various persons, within or external to the HES-SO.
